MTRMX042 - RICHARD P

dj slow

MAY MOTOR MIX: AN EXPLOSIVE LIVE SET FROM BOSSA NOVA CIVIC CLUB BY RICHARD P

Portland-born, Brooklyn-based MOTOR operative Nathaniel Young donned his Richard P cap to meld a mind-bending set for the club which we’re pleased to present as this month’s mix. Hard techno, industrial, acid, electro, EBM, exotic disco, cosmic psych and more are seamlessly bound together for this 2 hour sonic excursion.

Nathaniel co-founded the Blankstairs label in Portland with longtime collaborator Warren Mattox which grew out of art + music events they started throwing in late 2012. Like the label’s output, Nathaniel’s own music traverses styles while retaining a distinct voice regardless of approach or project name. From his hard-edged, acid-tinged techno workouts as Richard P to the ethereal dubbed-out atmospheres he creates as Kohl, Nathaniel’s music engages on multiple levels.

Watch out for a 12” on Transfusions by Richard P & Certain Creatures as GUILT, as well as a dj set b2b with Warren Mark Way at Output, May 12th, opening for Iori, Artefakt, Volvox, and Ryan Elliot.

MTRMX041 - R GAMBLE

dj slow

MOTORIST AND LOST SOUL ENTERPRISES BOSS R GAMBLE'S SLUDGY, SYRUPY SONIC CONCOCTION

Kicking things off at a plodding 75BPM, Gamble’s selections wind through blistered beats, doom-laden and lofi synths, EBM flavors, house and techno, and industrial touches for a freaked-out, slow-dance trip.

Gamble hails from Memphis where he grew up making lo-fi rap beats, seeing post-punk electronic bands, synth-laced garage rock and experiencing the wild disco and soul of Hollywood Raiford's Disco. While house & techno parties were limited, there was a small group of DJs who’d been active since the 90s who threw house parties Gamble frequented where they’d mix records all night. Upon landing in NY, he jumped deep into the club culture, eventually establishing a night at the infamous dive bar Wreck Room called Lost Soul which developed into the label and party series he helms today.

Following a 12” on Lost Soul and a cassette for MOTOR, Gamble’s next release, Artifacts, drops this month on Primitive Languages.

R Gamble upcoming tour dates with MOTOR/Lost Soul artist Heidi Sabertooth:

MTRMX040 - CORY SIMPSON

DEPTH PROMOTER/DJ CORY SIMPSON’S VISION OF A DYSTOPIC DANCEFLOOR

Without a doubt one of the busiest techno promoters and deejays in the Seattle area is Cory Simpson. Originally from Iowa, Simpson has been involved in underground techno since the 90s and has performed in major cities throughout the States. With 3 regular nights in Seattle - Depth, Macabre, and Black Leather - plus frequent traveling and local gigs, Simpson schedule is stacked.

Fresh off a visit to Vancouver supporting Rebekah, Simpson served up this at first brooding then unapologetically banging mix for MOTOR. A post-apocalyptic, deep-space soundscape slowly bubbles towards an industrial, sci-fi dancefloor full of pummeling beats that take no prisoners.

Later this month Simpson hits SF to play Inner Orbit, then Beta in Detroit, quickly followed by Depth x Research Present Mike Gervais at Kremwerk, Seattle.

MTRMX039 - MAROJE T

dj slow

DRIVING, INDUSTRIAL-TINGED MIX OF ELECTRO & TECHNO FROM BROOKLYN-BASED DJ/PRODUCER MAROJE T

Maroje T first caught my attention with his bumpin', noir-ish electro track on the excellent 3xLP comp "We Are What You Think We Are" from Lost Soul Enterprises. He found electronic music at a young age in Yugoslavia while driving in his father's car which featured an eclectic collection of cassettes from the 80s including ex-Yugoslavian new wave and rock, and Prince. Fast forward to recent years and his electronic music exploits include founding the Brooklyn party series Remedy, tracks/releases via MMODDEMM, Chem Club and Pinkman, the SEER project with Beau Lezard/Matt Parent, and a record about to come out under his Remora alias for Kraftjerkz.

Maroje plays Good Room for Sheik 'n' Beik's 10 year party Feb. 17th, F8 1192 Folsom for Chem Club on March 2nd, and Joy Tactics 005 in LA March 23rd.

MTRMX037 - DJ SPACE HEATER

OLYMPIA DJ AND ORGANIZER SPACE HEATER BLENDS DIVERSE CUTS FOR AN ECLECTIC MIX

House, Dubby ambient, minimal, funky bass, techno, acid, breakbeats and more collide through a dynamic trip that covers a lot of ground while maintaining the flow.

Space Heater’s (Garret Scott) penchant for electronic music came via a chance visit to Tresor about 5 years back, and after a move to Olympia and attending Decibel Festival and other similar events along the West Coast, he started deejaying a late-night dance music show on KAOS radio. He and I met at a block party in Olympia two summers ago and realized we’d seen each other at MOTOR events before. Later that fall Garret helped organize a MOTOR showcase in Olympia at Cryptatropa, a trend he’s continued in the months since, as well as working on his own music production.

Catch Space Heater on the decks this Saturday 12/9 for Ultraviolet Olympia’s NWIRP Benefit party.

MOTORIST HEIDI SABERTOOTH DELIVERS A BANGIN’ MIX FOR OUR OCTOBER ENTRY

Sabertooth’s mix comes on the heels of her tape for MOTOR last month and seamlessly traverses funky electro, intergalactic acid and hard techno for an adventurous, propulsive dance trip.

Originally from the Midwest and brought up with classical training in wind and string instruments, Sabertooth’s exposure to techno and dance music came during a trip to Europe which sparked a passion for hardware, production and deejaying. Now based in Brooklyn, she hosts the show Deep Dive on Newtown Radio and has a residency at Bossa Nova Civic Club called Techno Support Group. She’s been on bills with acts such as Ellen Alien, Lucy, DJ Spider, Umfang and Ital, while a second EP is due out from Lost Soul Enterprises in early 2018.

MTRMX034 - DJ BRICKS

dj slow

MOTOR VETERAN AND TUF MEMBER BIOME LAUNCHES NEW MONIKER DJ BRICKS WITH A PSYCHEDELIC TECHNO MIX

An ethereal, airy opening teases beats and hints at the dance floor before entrancing rhythms land us squarely in the club. Selecting a diverse cast of international producers, both established and under the radar, DJ Bricks (aka Biome, Louise Croff Blake) guides us on a finely interwoven techno journey via hazy, acid-laden, interstellar and psychedelic tracks that demonstrate their prowess for directing a crowd’s movements from the dj booth.

Coming up in the KUPS and Tacoma house party community, Blake later made their way to Seattle and considers sharing a MOTOR bill with Cassegrain in 2015 as the catalyst for cementing their decision to more seriously pursue a DJ career. A member of TUF, the Seattle-based collective of femme/non-binary artists working in electronic media, Blake’s sets and selections are very much informed by what it means to be a queer/non-binary DJ in Seattle and are complemented by an energy that is infectious when behind the decks.

MOTORIST DJ DEGENERATE FASHIONS A BROODING, CLANGING AURAL ODYSSEY UNDER HER CRUEL DIAGONALS MONIKER

Opening with a blistering slow-burner from local heroine Nordra and building through drones, experimental electronics, minimal techno, avant garde compositions and more, Cruel Diagonals’ mix is a shadowy journey that makes for an apt soundtrack to a dystopian sci-fi film you can’t wait to watch.

A jazz and classically trained vocalist, Megan Mitchell performs and creates in numerous capacities including as DJ Degenerate for MOTOR and with her electronic/vocal project Cruel Diagonals which serves as an outlet for destructive sample processing, vocal exploration, and a palette for inter-media contemplations and applications. Mitchell has performed at Debacle and Corridor Festivals and shared bills with acts such as Pharmakon, Pod Blotz, Holly Herndon, Shifted, and Elysia Crampton. In addition to production and deejaying, Mitchell indexes women/trans/non-binary composers at ManyManyWomen.com and documents industrial sites in the PNW via field recordings and photography.

OUR 30TH MIX FOR MAY DAY FROM MOTOR’S OWN CAVERNOUS

Opening with an ethereal, dreamy track, we travel from funky electro through watery beats and housey numbers before strapping in for heavy techno and industrial bangers. This well-rounded, all vinyl mix deftly encapsulates the variety of sounds that MOTOR embraces.

Rachel Glasgow’s beginnings in electronic music production started several years ago in Chicago, under the name Giedi Prime, a drone/noise project. With Cavernous the focus is techno-oriented, and all productions are played and recorded live. In addition to deejaying and making music, Rachel has been managing MOTOR events since late 2015, bringing in acts such as Minimal Violence, M.E.S.H, Silent Servant, Ancient Methods, a Diagonal Records showcase, and most recently O̸ΔK̸Σ.

LA’S FORCE PLACEMENT BRINGS THE HEAT FOR APRIL’S MIX

Opening with ethereal sensations, the mix slowly builds to funky rhythms, classic acid, clean pulsing techno and hypnotic dancefloor bangers, punctuated by a deft cool down period to close the set. One feels compelled to catch FP live upon experiencing his MOTOR mix.

Force Placement is the moniker of Los Angeles-based DJ/Producer Jason James. He was brought to my attention by MOTOR label manager Nathaniel Young who touted James’ DJ sets as being as solid as they are diverse. Jason hosts a weekly online radio mix-show called “FP Radio” every Tuesday night on RWD.FM, and co-runs a monthly underground electronic dance party called The Black Lodge alongside founder Vikas Malhotra aka kOsMik. Now entering its 2nd year, the party has hosted some of techno and electronic music’s big names and MOTOR favorites including Silent Servant, Claude Young, Svengalisghost, 2AM/FM, Civil Duty (Beau Wanzer & Shawn O’Sullivan), TX Connect, and Santiago Salazar, to name a few.

James kicked off Kid606’s Perpetual Dawn label with a 5-track digital EP in February 2017

MTRMX028 - DR. TROY

DR. TROY BRINGS HIS CEREBRAL, DARK TECHNO SET BACK TO THE MOTOR MIX SERIES

Kicking things off in the 90s with Autechre, Seefeel and a dreamy, hazy track from Robert Hood, the mix then veers towards shadowy techno territory and stays there, primarily featuring cuts from recent years.  Dr. Troy seamlessly blends pounding tracks from Prince of Denmark, Rebekah, Pris and Female to name a few to take the listener on a relentless, propulsive ride.

Having run synth/wave-oriented label Medical Records since 2007, Dr. Troy launched the techno 12” sub-label Transfusions in 2016 which has featured MOTOR friends Certain Creatures and Derivatives and releases from L/F/D/M and Archivist coming soon. The Dr. heads to Dallas next week for Techno Ritual with Convextion, while the Medical Records RX monthly at Pony is notorious for its infectious synth and Italo grooves.

MTRMX027 - LACK

dj slow

A CAREFREE NIGHT AT THE CLUB TURNS BIZARRE IN A MIX FROM LACK THAT TRAVELS FROM DANCE FLOOR TO DARK DREAMSCAPE.

Listening to this mix while preparing it for release, a story formed in my mind’s eye of a young clubber embarking on a seemingly innocent night out of dancing that takes a strange turn and ends up in odd places. The beat gets murky, surrounded by a thick fog of woozy ambience as the protagonist descends below the dance floor and into some faraway dream. Like a modern, metropolitan take on Alice in Wonderland where the club becomes the rabbit hole.

The beat gradually gets further obscured as dreamy synths creep in and distorted, haunting voices utter incomprehensible phrases and the listener falls backward, deep into an uneasy sonic escapade through electronic marshes and synthetic forests.

Lack (Philip Maier of Maine) is a MOTOR alum having played one of our early parties. His sound has been described as “gritty cathedral expansive new age” and "growth electronics", while it is his techno abstractions that have lent their sound to the MOTOR cadre. With releases on Morphine, Grovl Tapes, Tone Log, Hot Releases, and Angoisse, Lack has future productions in the works for 2MR as well as MOTOR.

MOTOR is excited to welcome Lack back into the fold not only with an upcoming tape but also on the bill for our NYC debut, Wednesday 2/08 at Bossa Nova Civic Club.

MTRMX026 - FAKE TRADE

dj slow

UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF FAKE TRADE’S MESMERIC SOUND COLLAGE

An eerie dream-like track opens up an eclectic excursion through sound as if in an altered state. Lofi ambience, cloud-like beats, foreboding spoken word, IDM and techno are combined for an unpredictable yet cohesive mix.

Fake Trade is but one of many monikers under which Seattle’s Levi Berner has made electronic music since 2000. This project came together in 2014 and focuses more on techno and experimental/ambient electronic sounds having made appearances for MOTOR in 2015 and 2016. With roots in the punk and noise communities, in addition to Fake Trade and his New Forest project, Berner runs the cassette label Shapeshifting Dimension releasing experimental, drone, post-industrial, techno and the like.

Fake Trade has upcoming live sets at the Black Lodge (Seattle) with A Story of Rats January 27th, and Verboten Fest in Vancouver BC this April, with releases forthcoming on Shapeshifting Dimension and MOTOR.

MTRMX025 - MINIMAL VIOLENCE

dj slow

MINIMAL VIOLENCE BOOKEND 2016 FOR MOTOR WITH A MIX ALMOST AS GOOD AS THEIR LIVE HARDWARE SET

Our final mix of 2016 and 25th in the series cuts straight to the chase with some electro-tinged beats that segue to druidic pulsations, acid squelches, classic house flavors and washes of cloud-like dreamy synth that let you catch your breath before the rhythm marches on.

A collaboration of Vancouver, B.C. artists A. Luk and Lida P., MV’s first release came as a cassette on Genero less than 2 years ago and the pair have seen no fewer than six 12”s or tapes come out since on the likes of MMODEMM, First Second and 1080p with a release coming up on Seattle’s Jungle Gym Records.  Active in Vancouver’s thriving underground electronic community with projects such as Sacred Sound Club, MOTOR was thrilled to host them for a live set in January this year, so it’s fitting they should help close out 2016 with this solid mix you’ll be going back to well into 2017.

MTRMX024 - CLEANSER

dj slow

CLEANSER DEMONSTRATES THE SOUND OF FAILURE ON THE EVE OF ELECTION DAY

Straight from the depths comes a demented mix from MOTOR artist Cleanser (Jack McGougan) that’s equal parts punishment and ecstatic release. Relentless industrialism clashes with murky passages and pummeling techno leaving you needing another listen to the twisted story.

A recent graduate of UPS and the fertile underground music community in Tacoma, Cleanser came about from a live set put together for his monthly basement party. From there Cleanser has been on several MOTOR bills, including our 4th Anniversary Party with Silent Servant, and recently released Violence is a Dream on our cassette series. McGougan’s other projects include asdfs which shared bills with Holly Herndon and Rabit for Elevator

MOTOR ALUMNI NICK BARTOLETTI UNLEASHES A MIX OF DARK TERRORS AND CHILLING AMBIENCE
