MTRMX030 - CAVERNOUS

Andrew Lench

OUR 30TH MIX FOR MAY DAY FROM MOTOR’S OWN CAVERNOUS

Opening with an ethereal, dreamy track, we travel from funky electro through watery beats and housey numbers before strapping in for heavy techno and industrial bangers. This well-rounded, all vinyl mix deftly encapsulates the variety of sounds that MOTOR embraces.

Rachel Glasgow’s beginnings in electronic music production started several years ago in Chicago, under the name Giedi Prime, a drone/noise project. With Cavernous the focus is techno-oriented, and all productions are played and recorded live. In addition to deejaying and making music, Rachel has been managing MOTOR events since late 2015, bringing in acts such as Minimal Violence, M.E.S.H, Silent Servant, Ancient Methods, a Diagonal Records showcase, and most recently O̸ΔK̸Σ.

MTRMX029 - FORCE PLACEMENT

Andrew Lench

LA’S FORCE PLACEMENT BRINGS THE HEAT FOR APRIL’S MIX

Opening with ethereal sensations, the mix slowly builds to funky rhythms, classic acid, clean pulsing techno and hypnotic dancefloor bangers, punctuated by a deft cool down period to close the set. One feels compelled to catch FP live upon experiencing his MOTOR mix.

Force Placement is the moniker of Los Angeles-based DJ/Producer Jason James. He was brought to my attention by MOTOR label manager Nathaniel Young who touted James’ DJ sets as being as solid as they are diverse. Jason hosts a weekly online radio mix-show called “FP Radio” every Tuesday night on RWD.FM, and co-runs a monthly underground electronic dance party called The Black Lodge alongside founder Vikas Malhotra aka kOsMik. Now entering its 2nd year, the party has hosted some of techno and electronic music’s big names and MOTOR favorites including Silent Servant, Claude Young, Svengalisghost, 2AM/FM, Civil Duty (Beau Wanzer & Shawn O’Sullivan), TX Connect, and Santiago Salazar, to name a few.

James kicked off Kid606’s Perpetual Dawn label with a 5-track digital EP in February 2017

MTRMX028 - DR. TROY

Andrew Lench

DR. TROY BRINGS HIS CEREBRAL, DARK TECHNO SET BACK TO THE MOTOR MIX SERIES

Kicking things off in the 90s with Autechre, Seefeel and a dreamy, hazy track from Robert Hood, the mix then veers towards shadowy techno territory and stays there, primarily featuring cuts from recent years.  Dr. Troy seamlessly blends pounding tracks from Prince of Denmark, Rebekah, Pris and Female to name a few to take the listener on a relentless, propulsive ride.

Having run synth/wave-oriented label Medical Records since 2007, Dr. Troy launched the techno 12” sub-label Transfusions in 2016 which has featured MOTOR friends Certain Creatures and Derivatives and releases from L/F/D/M and Archivist coming soon. The Dr. heads to Dallas next week for Techno Ritual with Convextion, while the Medical Records RX monthly at Pony is notorious for its infectious synth and Italo grooves.

MTRMX027 - LACK

Andrew Lench

A CAREFREE NIGHT AT THE CLUB TURNS BIZARRE IN A MIX FROM LACK THAT TRAVELS FROM DANCE FLOOR TO DARK DREAMSCAPE.

Listening to this mix while preparing it for release, a story formed in my mind’s eye of a young clubber embarking on a seemingly innocent night out of dancing that takes a strange turn and ends up in odd places. The beat gets murky, surrounded by a thick fog of woozy ambience as the protagonist descends below the dance floor and into some faraway dream. Like a modern, metropolitan take on Alice in Wonderland where the club becomes the rabbit hole.

The beat gradually gets further obscured as dreamy synths creep in and distorted, haunting voices utter incomprehensible phrases and the listener falls backward, deep into an uneasy sonic escapade through electronic marshes and synthetic forests.

Lack (Philip Maier of Maine) is a MOTOR alum having played one of our early parties. His sound has been described as “gritty cathedral expansive new age” and "growth electronics", while it is his techno abstractions that have lent their sound to the MOTOR cadre. With releases on Morphine, Grovl Tapes, Tone Log, Hot Releases, and Angoisse, Lack has future productions in the works for 2MR as well as MOTOR.

MOTOR is excited to welcome Lack back into the fold not only with an upcoming tape but also on the bill for our NYC debut, Wednesday 2/08 at Bossa Nova Civic Club.

MTRMX026 - FAKE TRADE

Andrew Lench

UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF FAKE TRADE’S MESMERIC SOUND COLLAGE

An eerie dream-like track opens up an eclectic excursion through sound as if in an altered state. Lofi ambience, cloud-like beats, foreboding spoken word, IDM and techno are combined for an unpredictable yet cohesive mix.

Fake Trade is but one of many monikers under which Seattle’s Levi Berner has made electronic music since 2000. This project came together in 2014 and focuses more on techno and experimental/ambient electronic sounds having made appearances for MOTOR in 2015 and 2016. With roots in the punk and noise communities, in addition to Fake Trade and his New Forest project, Berner runs the cassette label Shapeshifting Dimension releasing experimental, drone, post-industrial, techno and the like.

Fake Trade has upcoming live sets at the Black Lodge (Seattle) with A Story of Rats January 27th, and Verboten Fest in Vancouver BC this April, with releases forthcoming on Shapeshifting Dimension and MOTOR.

MTRMX025 - MINIMAL VIOLENCE

Andrew Lench

MINIMAL VIOLENCE BOOKEND 2016 FOR MOTOR WITH A MIX ALMOST AS GOOD AS THEIR LIVE HARDWARE SET

Our final mix of 2016 and 25th in the series cuts straight to the chase with some electro-tinged beats that segue to druidic pulsations, acid squelches, classic house flavors and washes of cloud-like dreamy synth that let you catch your breath before the rhythm marches on.

A collaboration of Vancouver, B.C. artists A. Luk and Lida P., MV’s first release came as a cassette on Genero less than 2 years ago and the pair have seen no fewer than six 12”s or tapes come out since on the likes of MMODEMM, First Second and 1080p with a release coming up on Seattle’s Jungle Gym Records.  Active in Vancouver’s thriving underground electronic community with projects such as Sacred Sound Club, MOTOR was thrilled to host them for a live set in January this year, so it’s fitting they should help close out 2016 with this solid mix you’ll be going back to well into 2017.

MTRMX024 - CLEANSER

Andrew Lench

CLEANSER DEMONSTRATES THE SOUND OF FAILURE ON THE EVE OF ELECTION DAY

Straight from the depths comes a demented mix from MOTOR artist Cleanser (Jack McGougan) that’s equal parts punishment and ecstatic release. Relentless industrialism clashes with murky passages and pummeling techno leaving you needing another listen to the twisted story.

A recent graduate of UPS and the fertile underground music community in Tacoma, Cleanser came about from a live set put together for his monthly basement party. From there Cleanser has been on several MOTOR bills, including our 4th Anniversary Party with Silent Servant, and recently released Violence is a Dream on our cassette series. McGougan’s other projects include asdfs which shared bills with Holly Herndon and Rabit for Elevator

MTRMX023 - NICK BARTOLETTI

Andrew Lench

MOTOR ALUMNI NICK BARTOLETTI UNLEASHES A MIX OF DARK TERRORS AND CHILLING AMBIENCE

Mysterious opening leads into washes of cavernous industrial beats, exotic synth lines, power electronics and darkwave for a disturbingly satisfying aural odyssey, punctuated by an unreleased, doom-laden modular synth track by our guest.

Nick’s involvement in Seattle’s electronic music community includes playing in Crypts, which has shared bills with Crystal Castles and Psychic TV, as well as being a member of Lust Strength which has toured with Vereker and Skander and opened for Ancient Methods at MOTOR. MTRMX022 - KRISTEN DALEN

Andrew Lench

KRISTEN DALEN’S DARK TECHNO MIX IS SELECTED WITH SURGICAL PRECISION

Reptilian robotics open to an electronic thunderstorm of dark beats stitched together with utmost precision to carry this ominous techno mix. Not for the faint of heart, Dalen wields a pair of CDJ 350s and XONE 22 mixer like a surgeon with a scalpel, and these selections cut deep, as if through the fog of the dance floor in the wee hours.

A member of TUF Collective and the Blankstairs roster, Dalen’s background in music is informed by classical training in violin as well as her visual art. Her mix for Seattle’s Free Axis Broadcast first piqued our interest, while she’s shared bills w Erika, Silent Servant for MOTOR’s 4th Anniversary Party, and will support Randomer & Hodge later this month at Research.

MTRMX021 - BLOOM OFFERING

Andrew Lench

SEATTLE’S INDUSTRIAL BEAT MAKER BLOOM OFFERING SERVES UP A MENACING MIX

A hazy atmosphere in the opening track sets the stage for the chilling words and sounds to follow. This mix tells an ominous story, integrating slow-burning electro, dark rave bangers, ritualistic beats, and foggy ambience, which bring to mind untold grisly episodes from Errol Childress’ overgrown fortress of bones.

Bloom Offering is the solo project of Nicole Carr who got her start with electronics in Portland’s noise scene, and since then her work has evolved to include zines as well as visual and installation art. A member of Seattle’s TUF Collective, she was on the bill for Debacle Fest 2016 and recently for MOTOR with White Visitation, with shows at the Black Lodge and in Portland with Skeleton Hands later this month. LA-based Sinneslöschen just released Bloom Offering’s latest tape, Restraint, “9 tracks of doom-laden bliss.”

MTRMX020 - CERTAIN CREATURES

Andrew Lench

CERTAIN CREATURES BRINGS DEEP AND DIVERSE CUTS FOR AN EPIC, ECLECTIC MIX

Brooklyn’s Oliver Chapoy aka Certain Creatures spoils our ears with a two hour plus mix of wide-ranging sonic selections. The journey begins with a rare track of tongue-in-cheek UK synth pop followed by some EBM and funky electro before migrating to the darker side via Zemi17’s gamelan-based techno. It’s here at about the 20 minute mark that the mix kicks into club mode, touching on a host of icy, minimal and industrial beats for a lesson in moving the dancefloor.

Oliver’s musical roots run numerous and deep, dating back to mid 90s Florida hard core and post rock, with time spent in the experimental cold wave / synth pop outfit Warm Ghost and countless other projects as musician, writer or engineer. As Certain Creatures, Chapoy has kept busy with remixes, collaborations with the likes of Ike Yard, a double LP that came out last year, and a 12” on Medical Records’ techno imprint Transfusions this fall. His live set floored us for a MOTOR night earlier this year, while you can catch him DJing Thursdays 8am-12pm EST with Clay Wilson at The Lot Radio in Brooklyn.

MTRMX019 - LORD PHATRICK

Andrew Lench

LORD PHATRICK BRIDGES ACID AND HOUSE CLASSICS WITH TRACKS ON THE CUTTING EDGE OF DANCE MUSIC TODAY.

Starting out bubbly and seemingly carefree, this all-vinyl mix quickly finds its way into an interstellar black hole where the acid overlords beckon you to dance into oblivion. With contemporary cuts taking up most of the first half, around the 30 minute mark we head back to the late 80s for some EBM and genre-defining Acid House, ultimately blissing out into an infinite cosmic sunrise with Legowelt as the mix comes to a close.

A seasoned DJ with roots in the Minneapolis hardcore and techno scenes of the early 2000s, Lord Phatrick (Pat Jandro) has shared bills with the likes of Derek Plaslaiko and Paul Birken, and his mixes have been featured on IntergalacticFM. Since his reign in Seattle, he’s guested at various nights around town including Medical Records RX, #frenchface’s Am I Normal, and Mouth2Mouth at Pony, as well as the Thumpin’ Thursday/Robota radio podcast.

MTRMX018 - DJ SH1-TR

Andrew Lench

LOCAL ELECTRONIC MUSIC AND ITALO COGNOSCENTE DJ SH1-TR SERVES UP A DANCE-READY MIX CONTEMPLATING POWER, CORRUPTION AND LIES.

Kicking things off with some contemporary New Beat that questions the driving forces behind governments and corporations, Sh1-tr (Jason Taylor) pounds his way across the dancefloor with EBM, acid and weirder House numbers. The dark and sometimes nightmarish sounds end on a bright note with a couple modern Italo disco tracks, and we’re left feeling all hope is not lost, as Kshama Sawant’s opening words suggest.

Jason Taylor’s deep collection and skills on the turntables had been under our radar until our friends at False Prophet suggested he DJ a MOTOR pre-party for Terekke and ASSS last fall. Seamlessly mixing tracks from diverse genres of electronic music, we knew a MOTOR mix was in his future. His passion for deejaying was honed at Bellingham house parties and radio shows, while these days you can catch him last Thursdays at Pony for Medical Records RX with Dr. Troy.

MTRMX017 - BANKIE PHONES

Andrew Lench

MOTORIST BANKIE PHONES RETURNS TO THE MIX SERIES AND BRINGS US TO THE EDGE OF DISASTER.

Collective resident and live hardware act Bankie Phones (Frankie Crescioni) brings the beats for another bumping yet comically dark entry in our monthly series. Themes such as mortality and individuality are pondered alongside love and relationships as the mix traverses categories from robotic electro-futurism, synth-pop, and dark techno to house and new wave. The diversity of tracks is augmented by Bankie’s precise use of drum machines to propel the narrative, causing heads to bob, feet to tap, hips to shake.

Frankie’s techno-love started in his hometown of Minneapolis where he rolled with the Intelliphunk crew, playing raw live material at parties with the likes of Surgeon, DVS1, Centrific, Motor (no relation), Doubt, Dustin Zahn, among others. Landing in Seattle circa 2010, a bill shared with Gavin Russom and Naughty Wood at the now defunct Electric Tea Garden brought more bookings and collaborations around town and subsequently landed Frankie at the MOTOR Collective.

Bankie Phones’ recent releases include VHS and cassette tapes for Minneapolis label Always Human. His live set has been compared to a bad acid trip, and he is celebrated on the internet for his digital art and gifs that juxtapose the horror and comedy of everyday life.

To keep things interesting, this month we also have a giveaway up for grabs. Snag a copy of our latest cassette, Diamond Eye by IVVY, if you are the first to correctly ID the track title and artist that is listed as Unknown in the tracklist below. Andrew Lench

VEINS DIGS DEEP IN HIS STACKED MUSIC LIBRARY TO TAKE YOU ON THE BEST BAD TRIP

Esteemed wordsmith and selector Dave Segal (AKA Veins) ventured into the farthest reaches of his most far-out record collection to put together a bizarre yet enlightening sonic journey. Starting out with a dark track and unsettling vocals, the mix travels through the space-time continuum via floating beats, liquid electronics, and alien-like radio transmissions to take the listener through an adventure in a bubbling concoction of cosmic sounds intended to “make them wonder what planet they’re inhabiting.”

Celebrated around Seattle and beyond for his stimulating, psychedelic sets with the {{{¡Distortions!}}} crew and flying solo, Veins has deejayed with the likes of Matmos, Oval, Sutekh, Loop, and Blues Control. Currently a staff music writer at the Stranger, Segal has been professionally writing about music since 1983, starting at Wayne State University and Creem magazine. His work has appeared in The Wire, Alternative Press, Detroit Metro Times and numerous other publications, while labels such as RVNG Intl., Light in the Attic, Medical Records, Sub Pop, Further Records and Holy Mountain have used his services for liner notes.

MTRMX015 - SIMIC

Andrew Lench

SIMIC OF secondnature DROPS DIVERSE CUTS INTO A SEAMLESS MIX FOR THE DANCEFLOOR

A sparse yet pounding opener kicks off a dance floor-ready mix from Ben Block - aka Simic - that percolates as it builds up to full thrust. It’s a cohe-sive yet diverse selection that drops spacey house grooves and darker techno elements alongside island percussion, rubbery bass lines and drippy electronics.

As with many of the secondnature crew, Block found his voice as a dj spinning records at KUPS, Tacoma. This led to production, live sets and a 12” on Major Problems in 2015. He’s shared bills with the likes Matias Aguayo, Varg, Best Available Technology, and Aurora Halal to name a few, and 2016 will see the release of a tape and a second 12”

Catch Simic live for MOTOR February 4th at Kremwerk with Patricia, Certain Creatures, and MOTORists Apartment Fox and dj slow.

MTRMX014 - ARCHIVIST

Andrew Lench

secondnature RESIDENT AND BLANKSTAIRS ALUM ARCHIVIST CRAFTS A DARK AND DANCEFLOOR-READY MOTOR MIX

Setting the tone for the dim months ahead with an ominous opening, our first mix of 2016 from Archivist (Alex Markey) quickly finds its pace with hard beats and metallic clangs. From there we travel across myriad styles of percussion from bouncing rhythms and marching drums, to mechanical pulses and relentless thuds, accentuated throughout by dreamlike patterns and psychedelic touches.

Markey’s presence in electronic and techno music has seen a steady trajectory since he started to DJ in 2012 at KUPS in Tacoma, no small debt to his seemingly effortless sets that bounce and flow with fluidity. Joining up with secondnature in 2013 as a resident, booker and sound engineer, this led to an EP in 2015 and bills on both coasts with acts such as Tin Man, Cassegrain, and SHXCXCHCXSH to name a few.

Archivist plays MOTOR January 7th at Kremwerk and has his second release slated for early this year.

MTRMX013 - DJ EXPLORATEUR

Andrew Lench

SEASONED SEATTLE SELECTOR/COLLECTOR DJ EXPLORATEUR BRINGS HER DISTINCTIVE TAKE ON INNOVATIVE, COSMIC ELECTRONICS TO THE MOTOR MIX SERIES.

DJ Explorateur (Valerie Calano) crafted a vinyl-only mix that seamlessly blends the cloud-like atmosphere of her ambient night at Q Nightclub, Rare Air, with the more abrasive, beat-oriented elements characteristic of a Motor event. The tribal-like feel of the first track opens up a sonic excursion that traverses territory from blissful dreamscapes to brooding cosmic dirges, all the while tracing a line via the exploration of electronic music past and present.

Calano’s deep knowledge of diverse genres does justice to her moniker, while it has also led to gigs with major acts like Animal Collective, Faust, and Loop, as well as compiling music for Seattle’s Bumbershoot music festival. She recently joined the dark electronics crew False Prophet, and regularly dj’s at Nacho Borracho, on Hollow Earth Radio’s Yonic Boom, and is a member of female/non-binary sound/art collective TUF.

MTRMX012 - NATHANIEL YOUNG

Andrew Lench

Serving up a stellar selection for the November MOTOR Mix entry is dj, photographer and Blankstairs co-boss Nathaniel Young. Recorded with records, 2 turntables, and a mixer, the mix’s foreboding intro brings to mind an intergalactic sacrificial ceremony from another dimension before leading to the dance floor in short order. Futuristic, mutant beats, classic house, acid bangers, and everything in between leave you wanting more as the mix ends in a pulsing, frenetic climax, giving you no choice but to hit the repeat button to take it in all over again.

Now based in Brooklyn, Nathaniel hails from Portland, OR where he co-founded the Blankstairs multimedia outlet and event series with Warren Mattox, a longtime creative collaborator and best friend. Originating as an all-ages series of parties in alternative spaces in late 2012 and 2013 showcasing live music, DJs, and art, the pair founded the project as a “platform to release whatever music or art that captivates them and evokes an emotional response." Nathaniel and Blankstairs have hosted and/or shared bills with some or our favorite artists including Strategy, White Visitation, Francesco de Gallo, Octa Octa, and Black Hat, to name but a few.
